Washington picked up somewhat of an upset win in their NIT opener taking down a solid Boise State squad by a final of 77-74. Washington has been having a nice bounce back year as a program under their new head coach standing 21-12 overall and the Huskies went 10-8 in the Pac 12. The Huskies have shown well outside of conference play picking up wins this year against teams like Belmont, Kansas, Montana, and in their last outing against the Broncos. On the year Washington has been a balanced group ranking 156th in the nation in scoring and 179th in total defense.
Saint Mary’s isn’t happy about not getting into the NCAA tournament after being ranked in the top 25 for pretty much the entire year. The Gaels didn’t let the snub faze them in their NIT opener as the veteran Gaels took down an overmatched SELA squad by a final of 89-45. The Gaels haven’t gone against the toughest schedule this season and that’s a main reason why Saint Mary’s came up short of making the Big Dance. On the year Saint Mary’s stands 79th in the nation in scoring and 11th in total defense.
Washington is more enthusiastic about their opportunity in the NIT than the Gaels and it’ll be interesting to see if that plays a factor in this matchup with the Huskies coming in as serious dogs. We like Washington to compete hard in their second round game as they go on to cover the spread.
